So many shit nights starting around where I am
most of which are nights for really grim dubstep because it’s the only genre people have ever heard of nowadays
And the flyers, my god.
saying it looks like something they did it MS paint would be a compliment
don’t get me started
since when did it become a thing for everyone over the age of 13 to run a DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBSTEP night
Gonna change my middle name on facebook to “Dubstep” who works at “Really sick DJ” maybe then I’ll be able to succeed in my DJing
award for best graphic designer in history goes to this guy
ughhhh what the fuck. 8 DJs, 4 hours, 30 quid?? Is this for real? At least the shitty no-name DJs in Detroit know they can’t away with charging dumbasfuck prices like this.
I think it’s 3 pounds, not 30.
So glad that the ‘dubstep’ scene in Chicago has weeded out a bunch of morons.
3 deck dubstep mix from 2010. Previously only available at Gramaphone Records in Chicago.
140 Podcast August 2012 feat. Mala, Perverse, Dismantle, LAXX, Soap Dodgers, Farkas, Anex, Biome and more. Share/RT
I’m playing house/techno/uk bass/wot u call it at 2 separate drum and bass/junglist parties this weekend.
What would you want to hear??
140 jungle would go down nicely. The breakier end of UK Funky as well. Or, D&B producers who also make more mid-tempo stuff.
Some tune ideas:
Champion - Crystal Meth - Butterz
DJ Madd - Junglist - Black Box
DJ Madd - Murder 96 - Black Box
Emalkay - Crusader (Levels) - Dub Police
Kryptic Minds - The Fifth

Smart Mix 11:
DJ The Tornado
BASSWEIGHT takes place every first Thursday of each month at Smart Bar in Chicago. Its mission is to preserve and share the “foundation sounds” of bass music through programming focused on deep dubstep, grime, UK garage, and drum & bass. Presented by Brüt Force Family members DJ The Tornado, DJ Sushi, and Whoa-B, it also aims to cultivate a sense of community in its audience of enthusiastic club-goers with support from local, national, and global DJs and MCs.
Tornado began putting on the night in April 2011, and a year later found himself with the opportunity to put on the night at Smart Bar, a Chicago clubbing institution.
This mix comes just days before Brüt Force takes over the Funktion 1 system for an evening of sub-bass pressure, with very special guest Seven. With releases on high-profile labels such as Tempa and Black Box, Seven makes his Chicago debut hot on the heels of his debut album “Evolution”.
A word on the mix…
“I put this mix together to show what Bassweight is all about. I wanted to represent the full spectrum of music that I play at our night, and to engage people who might otherwise be dismissive of ‘dubstep,’ which has a bit of a negative connotation nowadays. I’ve been listening to dubstep since roughly 2005, and many producers and DJs have strayed from the scene’s foundation. Though I’m not judgmental of those who have gone in a more commercial direction, it’s not really the type of music I want to hear when I go to a dubstep night. With Bassweight, we want to represent that foundation sound and foster a community spirit that made the scene so inviting to people, and so exciting to be around. I tried my best to play all sorts of tunes under the dubstep umbrella to show there is something for everybody in this music - there are some techy tunes, a couple aggressive tracks, some deeper ones, then ended with some UK garage and grime as well as a few Seven cuts back-to-back so you can see the diversity in his productions. I also did my best to play recent tracks to show just how much good music is coming out of our scene at the moment. I hope you enjoy, and to see you on the dancefloor at Smart Bar for Bassweight the first Thursdays of the month!”

Sad days. Flight to NYC is cancelled due to bad weather until tomorrow. Coki in Detroit instead.
Still, that’s a pretty good second option.
There’s been a lot of uproar from the ‘heads’ about SPIN’s article ‘Bass Cannon: 30 Greatest Dubstep Songs of All-Time’. While it is nearly impossible to condense 10+ years of a scene (and more importantly, a culture) into 30 tunes, and lists are always contentious, I thought I would try my hand at education. The tunes listed below are all hyperlinked to YouTube so you can listen to them at your convenience. I’ve included the label info on each tune for those who want to buy them and support the artists.
A few notes on how I compiled this list:
Before, which means from 1999-2003. These are tunes that influenced what we now know as ‘dubstep’.
Golden Era, meaning from 2004-2007. These are widely considered ‘classics’ by all those into the sound, and are widely influential for one reason or another.
Current, meaning from 2008-present day. These are tunes that show where dubstep is headed. These tracks encorporate influences from UKG and grime, dubstep’s predecessors, as well as jungle and other sounds inspirational to the sound and culture.
The reason for this is because Skream and Benga are two of the most influential, iconic producers in the scene. Regardless of what you think of their current output, you cannot disagree that dubstep would sound completely different if it wasn’t for their early productions. DMZ, as a crew, are an institution and to me represent what dubstep culture is about. Their productions, much like Skream and Benga’s, shaped what dubstep has become and without their music (or the dances they host) our scene would be something different altogether.
I want the music to speak for itself. I want people to listen to each of these tunes, if you haven’t heard them before, and try to see how they’ve been influential. Often I find that when people try to explain to me why a certain piece of music is important, it doesn’t resonate - I just have to hear it for myself.
Obviously, these are some of my favorite tunes and it is all my opinion (hence why it’s on my blog). Feel free to debate, disagree, or ask me why I chose a particular tune for the list.
Without further ado…
